What is a keyword?

Search engine optimization of your website will be built upon the keywords you select for your web pages. Before Search engine optimizers start working on your website, they will ask you to select main keywords for your web pages or website, but you can’t select the right keywords unless you know what they really are and how important they are in the success of your internet marketing.

Keywords are words or phrases that internet users use when they are searching a topic on the internet. Keywords present the content of your website and make it visible to internet users through search engines. A keyword can be either a single word or a phrase. “Seafood Restaurant Virginia?” can be a keyword.. So if you type in “Seafood Restaurant Virginia?” in the search box of your browser, you will see a list of relevant websites matching those words.  Search engines choose the matching or relevant web pages based on their content and “keyword density“. When you search for “Website design Maryland“, search  engines look through the web pages containing this keyword and the number of times this keyword appears on these web pages. It is called “keyword density“. Keyword density is based on the percentage of times the keyword appears on a web page compared to the total number of words on that page.

Broad Keywords

Single word keywords or Broad Keyword are normally more general and may apply to more than one field and business. The keyword “Design” is a good example. It may be applicable to “Web Design“, “Kitchen Design“, “Product Design” or so many other related jobs or businesses. Now if you change “Design” to ” Website Design” then search applies only to the web pages with topic “Website Design” and not any other kind of design related jobs. It is very hard to get a high ranking for a broad keyword since there will be a global competition, and I am not sure if it is really worth it.

Long-tail Keywords

The other type of keywords are phrases or multi word keywords. They are also called Long-tail Keywords. “Website Design Maryland” is a long-tail keyword. It specifies the industry and the location. The searcher specifies what exactly she is looking for and where it should be located, and the search engines know what to look for: Website Design businesses in Maryland. It may be a lot easier to get a high ranking in search engines for a Long-tail Keyword since it is more specific or applies to a local or limited geographic area.

Keywords define the purpose of your website and the service or business you offer, and they should match your website content. Knowing your target audience is the first step toward selecting the right keywords.
